If your dentist told you that you need periodontist’s care to graft your gums, do not panic. It sounds scarier than it is. You may need gum graft surgery to protect your teeth from receding or to improve its aesthetic look. Gun recession is a process when your gum tissue’s level gets lower baring the tooth or is root. When neglected, it can lead to the bone damage.

Very often people do not even know that their teeth are baring. But the problem becomes real when teeth become sensitive to temperatures. Gum recession if not treated properly can cause a loss of tooth. So the gum grafting procedure is necessary to solve this problem.

There are three strategies of gum grafting. They differ according to the individual situation. Your periodontist nyc will choose the one that will suit you the best.

  1. Connective tissue grafting. It is the most widely used method to treat roots exposition. The palate skin is excised and tissues from under it are taken. Then they are stitched to the gum edge that surrounds roots. The palate is stitched too after the tissues are taken.

  2. Free gum tissues grafting. The tissues are also taken from the palate. But they are taken not from under the palate, but from the palate itself. Usually it suits to people with thin gums needing consolidation.

  3. The tissue is taken from the surrounding gum. But a patient should have enough amount of it. If his gums do not allow doing that, other methodics are used.

Sometimes the grafting material is taken from tissue bank. In other cases special proteins stimulating the growth of bones and tissues are used. Each situation is unique and requires individual treatment.

The freshly grafted gum needs special care. It must not be cleaned with toothbrush or floss until recovered. Doctor will prescribe special mouth rinse for postop hygiene. Also he may appoint antibiotics to reduce infection risk. Soft cold products will be the best food during the recovery time.
