Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is a very widely spread disease. About 20% of the world population suffer from it. The reasons of its appearance are still undefined. It is known that if a person’s bowel is sensitive, it can irritate because of different factors like stress or unhealthy food. The unpleasant feelings may occur in different parts of the stomach. They appear suddenly and pass in the same way. Very often defecation or emitting of gases may relief the pain. The intensity of these feelings is varied individually. Some people do not require long-lasting IBS treatment, and in some it is really difficult to cure.

Sometimes the irritation is characterized by change of the feces, which is also very individual. It can be diarrhea or severe constipation. Even both of them can perform in turn. The defecation may be poor and have granulated structure, or liquid and have band structure. Sometimes the mucus can be present in it. A feeling of incomplete emptying the bowel may occur.

IBS often causes imperative urges, especially in the morning or after breakfast. Also a patient can feel dizziness, muscle pains, burping, headache and fatigue, bad appetite, pain in spine, feeling of heaviness after meals, pyrosis and irritable bladder syndrome. So the symptom are very various and sometimes do not look like problems with bowel at all. The intensity of their expression may also vary.

Though the reasons are still unknown, there are some thoughts about it. The increased activity of digestive tract parts that causes unpleasant feelings may be provoked by various reasons.

  1. Increased activity of nerves or muscles of the digestive tract. They react on brain’s messages, and their amount may be increased by stress or emotional breakdown.

  2. Infection or bacteria in the digestive tract. Actually it is not the reason of IBS appearance, but the infection can provoke increasing of existing disease manifestations.

  3. Antibiotic treatment. Antibiotics destroy not only harmful organisms, but harmless and useful too. It misbalances the digestive tract work.
