Teeth Implantation: Choose Your Anesthesia

Tooth implant process, or the implantation of artificial teeth roots is the procedure that scares a lot of people. We are used to the idea that everything connected with dentistry is a nightmare. This is a mistake that costs dental health to many people. The truth is that any dentistry procedure can be absolutely painless thanks to right choice of anesthesia.

Are dental implants painful? No, they are not. It is quite a simple and fast procedure that, if not complicated with any side factors, lasts no longer than 10 minutes. Even in more serious cases, with bone grafting teeth, when it lasts 1-2 hours, it can be painless. Of course, the professional anesthesia makes it so.

But what type of anesthesia to choose? There are so many variants. Local or general? Let us observe the cases and determine what will be more suitable.

Local anesthesia is more widely used during the implantation. It would be the best way out in case if you are:

  1. Setting up to four implants, if the gum amount is enough and the work surface is not inflamed.

  2. Suffering from odontophobia. Usually it goes together with sedation that has calming and relaxing effect. It can even make a patient partially lose memories about the operation. Some mix sedation with general narcosis but they are not the same. Sedation allows communication between doctor and patient that can help in a process a lot.

Well, the general narcosis is recommended to apply in such cases:

  1. A patient is allergic to all types of local anesthesia.

  2. A patient has a strong gag reflex that does not allow manipulation with molars.

  3. A patient has mental disorders.

  4. A patient has serious dysfunctions of immunity system.

  5. There is a necessity to graft bone block from parietal bone or illium.

As you can see, there are only certain serious reasons for applying general narcosis. In case of any cardiovascular disease local anesthesia cannot be applied, only general narcosis is recommended.
